Fish dishes are among the most delicious and beloved dishes that we put on our table at least once a week on the recommendation of nutritionists. But can it turn out that the fish we eat with such pleasure is harmful to our health?

The modern way of life leaves its serious mark on fish. Toxic chemicals, as well as industrial and household waste, accumulate in fish and seafood and can turn even baked mackerel into unsafe food.

Experts are adamant that the most heavy metals are in oceanic and marine species - tuna, salmon, swordfish, shark. Among river fish species, demersal fish such as carp are the most endangered.

Elevated amounts of mercury, lead and cadmium, which are dangerous to human health because they are toxic, are most common in fish harvested from the Baltic Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

The Active Consumers Association in our country has tested 12 brands of frozen fish purchased in early September from the Bulgarian market. All examined brands are imported, and in addition to the presence of heavy metals, the information presented on the labels is also analyzed.

The good news is that of the 12 brands surveyed, only one has an elevated lead content. It is a frozen sprat caught in the Baltic Sea region. The same product also contains high but not exceeding the permitted amounts of cadmium and mercury.

Tests by the Active Consumers Association also found lead levels in the alert sector for two mackerel samples caught in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

In three samples, the Baltic sprat in question, as well as hake from the North-West Atlantic and mackerel from the Atlantic, quantities of mercury falling into the alert sector were detected.

Only frozen sprat from the Baltic Sea is dangerous for human health, while the other two products should be approached with caution and their consumption should be limited to a minimum.

Increased amounts of lead in the diet can cause chronic fatigue, insomnia, anemia, colic. Cadmium causes kidney and liver problems. Particularly vulnerable are pregnant and lactating women, as well as children under 3 years of age, for whom it is advisable to limit to a minimum the fish products from their menu.

The analysis of the labels of the studied fishery products found that in the case of two trademarks the expiration date had expired by more than 3 months. These are Pangasius, which is available in Kaufland, and Talapia, which is offered by Metro.

The Association found that in all the studied brands the strong hydration of the packages is impressive. Although for some brands, especially for filleted fish, the values of the added phosphates, water and glaze are correctly indicated on the labels, they reach up to 30% of the weight of the fish.

This is not only an incorrect way to make a profit, but also carries a risk to human health, because excessive intake of saline solutions has an adverse effect on the cardiovascular system.
