Healthy eating is essential for the proper functioning of all processes in our body. Deficiency or excess of important nutrients, minerals, vitamins or trace elements can lead to serious consequences for our health.

But what does proper nutrition mean and how exactly do we need to eat to be healthy?

Functional nutrition

A healthy diet helps us stay in shape, because a varied diet is the best medicine. The father of medicine, Hippocrates, said: Let your food be medicine and medicine be food!

The increase in consumption and economic development has caused a significant change in our tastes, where we actually consume more and more meat, leaving vegetables in the background. Plant products are replaced by animal products, as a result of which our body does not receive all the necessary and essential nutrients (meat provides fats and proteins, but the nutrients are much less than those in vegetables).

This is one of the reasons for the increase in diseases today, and many of them are even becoming the scourge of today's society. That is why today more and more doctors and nutritionists have begun to study the concept of nutritional therapy or so-called functional nutrition.

Many of the so-called functional foods normalize blood pressure, promote the elimination of toxins from the body, help these processes to run more efficiently and rejuvenate our body.

For example, today more than half of Japan's food products are functional foods. Unlike our traditional cuisine, theirs is extremely rich in a variety of seafood, vegetables and fruits. The fact that the average life expectancy is more than 84 years can be considered convincing, while in Bulgaria, for example, the average life expectancy is about 70-75 years.

An important argument is the fact that in recent years the average life expectancy of the Japanese has increased by more than 20 years. It is the entry of functional nutrition into the culture that helps them solve a number of problems: overweight, lowered immunity, heart problems, diseases of the digestive system and even malignant tumors.

Food can be considered functional, if it has been shown to have a positive effect on reducing the risk of various diseases or leading to improved and maintained health. Such foods should be a regular part of our diet.

Functional nutrition includes

1. Natural healthy foods: rich in lycopene tomatoes, soy with phytosterols and other nutrients, cranberry juice, oatmeal, citrus fruits, black and green tea, corn oil, grapes, flax seeds;

2. Foods enriched with biologically active substances: dairy products with probiotic bacteria, beef with anti-cancer linoleic acid, eggs enriched with omega-3 (have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system), isotonic drinks containing minerals and vitamins, wholemeal bread, muesli and vitamin drinks.
