Residents of the Spanish city of Nero will undergo a diet that will last 2 years. For a healthier life, they are called by municipal councilors and the mayor of the city.

The goal is for the 39,000-strong city to lose weight so that the Spanish province of Galicia can lose a total of 100,000 kilograms of excess weight by 2020, Euronews reports.

Six out of ten residents of the city of Nero are overweight and 19% of the population is obese. Across Spain, 17% of the population is overweight.

During this period, local restaurants will offer only healthy dishes, and in the city will be different health centers that will encourage the population to physical activity.

In addition to exercise and a healthy diet, the program also includes free medical examinations, which will take into account the improvement of physical indicators.

The project is led by Dr. Carlos Pineiro, and told the media that its main goal is to create healthy habits among children.

In 10-year-old children, obesity jumped by 2 points and overweight by 5 points. This increases the risk of developing chronic diseases and it is necessary to make changes, says Dr. Pineiro.

The city of Nero is located on the Atlantic coast and their cuisine is dominated by seafood dishes. But at the same time they cook fatter, which will change in these 2 years.

Students will be encouraged to walk or bike to school. Gymnastics, dancing, swimming and walking are provided for people over 70 years of age. With this program, the local municipality hopes to save 1.8m euros in costs.
