Public canteens in the Danish city of Randers will be obliged to offer pork to their customers according to the latest decision of the local parliament, reports AFP.

The change was voted to protect Denmark's national culinary traditions, say advocates of the measure. According to her opponents, however, the change is only intended to provoke Muslims in the country.

The decision made by the municipal council of Randers states that all public institutions will be obliged to emphasize the traditional Danish cuisine and mainly pork.

Each of the dishes must be prepared in a balanced and healthy way, and no one is obliged to eat it if it violates the religious principles in which he believes, the order says.

The banned pork in Islam is a great classic in Danish cuisine and for this reason the change divides the people in the country.

A spokesman for the anti-immigrant Danish People's Party, Martin Henriksen, backed the idea of Randers' advisers on Twitter, and former Integration Minister Manu Saren called the change a real scandal.

Pork on the menus of Danish public places has been the subject of debate since 2013, when former Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt openly criticized sites that argued over the serving of pork dishes out of respect for Muslims.

Then a study by Ekstra Bladet found that 30 out of 1,719 public canteens in Denmark had refused to cook pork and had also started cooking according to Islamic rules.

About 13 million pigs are raised in Denmark, with the sale of pork products and live pigs accounting for about 5% of the country's exports.
