GMOs or so-called genetically modified organisms are organisms whose genes have been intentionally altered by humans. Most of the food products offered on the market in Bulgaria actually contain GMOs. However, this is not marked on their packaging at all, Reporter writes.
It turns out that the producers and importers of these products do not comply with the Bulgarian legislation, according to which the presence of GMOs must be indicated in large font on the label of the product, and in case of content above the permissible quantity to be written at least twenty-five percent of it..
So far there is no registered case in which a product containing GMOs is caught and re-labeled in accordance with the Food Act, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency / BFSA / are adamant.
The requirement for the labeling of GMOs is present in the legislation of our country since 2010, but it is still not reflected in the ordinance for labeling to the Food Act. Traders adhere to it, which is a window that allows them not to comply with the requirements, commented Borislav Sandov of the Coalition Bulgaria Free of GMOs.
The BFSA believes that the law is superior to the ordinance and the texts of the two do not need to overlap. However, the agency does not check every batch of imported food, as this could not happen.
Foodstuffs are checked by risk assessment. Thus, in the presence of large quantities of GMOs found in rice imported from China, batches coming from the Asian side will be strictly monitored from now on.
However, this does not apply to food products from the European Union, as it is assumed that in the event of the presence of GMOs in them, it will be indicated on the label.
A number of products on display in local supermarkets contain genetically modified organisms. These include pasta, chocolate desserts, bread, yoghurt, cheese and beer.
However, there is no information about this on their packaging, according to an analysis by the National Center for Public Health and the Ministry of Health. In 300 inspections in 2012, the presence of GMOs was detected in ten percent of cases.
