The origin of the donut is quite discussed. The recipe for fried dough is not unknown to any country or culture and variations of the donut can be seen all over the world.
Although the exact place, time and person responsible for the creation of the donut, are unknown, there are several events around its history that are quite curious.
History shows that the Dutch made greasy cupcakes in the mid-19th century. These early donuts were just balls of dough fried in lard until golden brown. Because the center of these cupcakes did not get ready as quickly as outside, they were filled with fruit, nuts, or other fillings that did not require cooking.
As Dutch immigrants began to settle in the United States, they continued to make their olykoeks, where they were influenced by other cultures until they reached today's donuts. The original decision for the raw center, namely to fill it with some stuffing, was replaced by Hansen Gregory, an American ship's captain. In 1847, Gregory solved this problem by drilling a hole in the center of the dough ball. So he eliminated the problem center.
A rather mythical version of Gregory's discovery states that the idea was given to him in a dream by angels. Although there are other versions about the very invention of the hole, the case is undoubtedly attributed to this captain.
In 1920, Russian-born immigrant Adolf Levitt created the first automated donut machine. The futuristic automated process for making donuts was presented at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1934. The fair advertised donuts as a hit of the Century of Progress and they became for a moment a culinary sensation throughout the country.
Donuts are now a favorite food for millions of people around the world. Nowadays, their fame does not fade, but on the contrary - grows and develops. New flavors and decorations are created every day, so we always have the opportunity to try a new and different donut.
