Whether you are an official guest or are among those invited to a festive lunch or corporate dinner, it will certainly be helpful for you to be aware of the permissible behavior according to public etiquette and protocol.

- When you are a guest at a formal dinner, do not change the place assigned to you by the hosts. They have certainly made great efforts to arrange the guests according to the appropriate mark, so that those sitting nearby have common topics of conversation;

- You are expected to talk to people sitting on both sides of you. You may have come with a colleague, friend, or family member, but that doesn't mean just contacting them;

- If you are in a restaurant, do not start eating until they have served all the guests at your table. If you are at a formal dinner, wait for the host to start eating first, unless he himself insists otherwise;

- Do not take personal belongings, cosmetics, medicines and accessories on the table. Even if you have to take medicine just before a meal, do so in the most discreet way possible;

- Do not fix your makeup on the table, even in the company of loved ones;

- Do not put your electronic devices, computer, phone on the table, leave them in your bag or in your clothes. In the event of an emergency phone call, remove your handset without looking at the display, answer discreetly and explain that you cannot talk at the moment and you will call later. Then apologize to the people around you. Don't let others think that the caller is more important than them;

- Do not offer your food to others and do not try theirs;

- Do not stretch across the table if you want something away from you. Instead, ask in a measured gesture or in a low voice for someone to pass it to you;

- The order of ordering according to the label has evolved over the years. The question of whether ladies should order first is no longer on the agenda. To date, those who are the first to be ready with their choice have an advantage. In this way, they leave the rest more time to review the menu;

- When paying the bill, the division between the sexes has also not played a role for a long time. In the past, they may have given the ladies a menu without prices, but nowadays the bill can be taken by the person who sent the invitation.

Here are some instructions that most professionals are lucky enough to study in specialized schools:

APPLIANCES

The utensils must be arranged in the order in which they will be used. Start from the outermost and move on to the others in the direction of the plate. Knives and spoons are on the right and forks are on the left.

As a rule, the knife is held by the part of the handle that is next to the blade. The only exception is the fish knife, which behaves like a pencil.

AMERICAN DIET

The so-called American method is already widely used in many countries and is not considered a sign of bad taste. When cutting food, Americans hold a fork in their left hand and a knife in their right, then leave the knife at the top of the plate and move the fork in their right hand for convenience.

If they have to leave the utensils, for example to drink from the cup, the fork and knife must be placed on the right side of the plate so that there is a distance between them.

When the meal is over, place the utensils close together on the right side of the plate. If we imagine that the plate is a clock, the upper part of the utensils will point for ten hours and the handles will point for eight hours.

EUROPEAN EATING

Europeans cut food like Americans, but eat with their left hand. It is not necessary to leave the fork and knife after each bite, but it should be done when he wants to take another item or if he wants to drink from his glass.

To show that they have not finished eating, the Europeans cross the fork and the knife, and to show that they have eaten, they leave the utensils in the same way as the Americans, with the difference that the fork is turned down - with the teeth to the plate.

GLASSES

The cups are placed on the right side of the plate and, like the utensils, are arranged in the order in which they will be used. In cases where the celebration begins with a speech, after or during which toasts and toasts will be raised, the glass of champagne or white wine is located closest to the plate, because it is expected to start with it. The red wine glass is just behind the white wine glass. The water glass is placed behind the wine glasses and is larger than them. There is a second option for the champagne glass - it should be behind the other three, if the champagne is intended for dessert.

As for how the glasses are held, experts advise you to hold the wine glasses by the stool, because otherwise you will change the temperature of the wine, and thus its taste. This does not apply to the water cup - you should not hold it by the chair, but by the lower part, just above it.

If you do not want to be served any of the drinks, do not turn the glass over, but use the familiar gesture to put your hand over it and kindly refuse the service staff - bartender, waiter, service employee, caterer.

Although the next gesture is also popularly known from the movies, a manifestation of bad taste is to tap metal or stainless steel utensils on the glasses to attract attention.

Table etiquette and social protocol should not be neglected, as they greatly influence our performance in society.
