About 5 cm of bread, which was baked in 1817, was given to the Lerft family from Bavaria as an ancient relic. The family has been storing bread for almost 200 years.

Although two centuries ago its size was not so modest, today it is only 5 centimeters. Since flour was in short supply in 1817, chalk and sand were also used to knead the bread.

It was wrapped in wrapping paper, which is also kept by the 73-year-old grandmother, who in turn will pass it on to the next oldest person in the Lerft family.

At the time it was prepared, the bread cost 4 pfennigs, which today is equal to 40 euros.

The reason for the high price is the lack of wheat this year. Due to the eruption of the Indonesian volcano Sumbawa throughout Europe and in many parts of the world there was an acute shortage of food.

The discarded ash has overshadowed the sun and the temperature has dropped, damaging the year's harvest. For this reason, the cooks had to look for substitutes for wheat flour to knead the bread.

The 200-year-old antiquity in Bavaria may be the oldest bread that testifies to this event. It is a very small roll and bears the seal with the year of its production 1817.
