Similar is the Chinese low jug, which reaches only 140 cm in height. The southeastern regions of North America are inhabited by the two-meter withered jug with light yellow 10 cm flowers, gathered in large inflorescences.
The most interesting species is the Edible Jug (C. edulis), which the locals call achira. In the Andes, achira is grown for its starch-rich, lumpy-thickened rhizomes that are boiled and eaten. In Peru, they are baked and made into a thick porridge with a sweet taste.
Roasted rhizomes of edible jug are sold as a local delicacy. In Colombia, dried, finely ground rhizomes make flour from which cakes are made.
The most common ornamental plant is the garden jug (C. indica hybrida). It includes two types:
- Kani Krozy - its flowers are about 10 cm in diameter and resemble those of gladiolus;
- Orchid-like jugs - their flowers are up to 20 cm in diameter, curly and resemble the flowers of the Catlea orchid.
