Good news for people who think they are fuller than usual. It turns out that, in fact, "overweight" occurs only in the brain. A new British study came to such conclusions.

Researchers at University College London have found that the brain's perception of our body is very distorted, and in some cases our minds think we are two or three times larger than we actually are.

The study, conducted by the Council for Biotechnology and Biological Research, suggests that this explains why thin women, looking in the mirror, are perceived as overweight, which in turn causes total confusion in the diet.

"These findings may also explain some mental states, including anorexia, because there is indeed a large deviation in the perception of true body size," said study leader Dr. Michael Longo.

During the research activities, the study participants were asked to place their left hand under a board, after which it was necessary to point out with their other hand where their joints and fingertips were located. A camera captured the points where participants in the experiment thought parts of their bodies were located.

Analyzing the records, the researchers found that people thought that their hands were 2/3 larger and, interestingly, 1/3 shorter than their actual size.

"Our research shows a very disturbing discrepancy in perceptions of the shape of the hands, which is a disproportion observed in almost all participants," said Dr. Longo.

Scientists are adamant that the hand is perceived much wider than its actual size, and the fingers - shorter than they are - these findings may apply to all parts of our body and their perception. They also explain why we think we are fuller than we really are.
