Customers have warned that only 20 days before Easter, Bulgarian traders are enticing consumers with low prices of lamb, some of which is from last year.
Doctors warn customers not to cook meat at questionable prices, because by saving money, they can harm their health.
"If a person only gets rid of a disorder after eating stale meat, it will again reach into his pocket for drugs and absence from work," the doctors said.
The cunning traders have reduced the old lamb to the tempting BGN 6 per kilogram, deceiving consumers that they are buying fresh lamb.
The lamb offal, which is offered at prices below BGN 3 per kilogram, has often been marinated in cold water, vinegar and salt to mask the bad smell of old meat.
The fraud can only be detected when the meat is cooked. Experts say that the old meat, although cooked for several hours, still remains tough.
The National Sheep Breeding Association has announced that it does not expect a jump in lamb prices for the Easter holidays.
The association urges customers to buy meat directly from farms to make it easier to trace the origin of meat and its quality.
This Easter, it is possible that neighboring Serbia, and more precisely from Bosilegrad, will be the most serious competition for Bulgarian lamb, in terms of prices.
Before the big Christian holiday, Serbs offer lambs for 300 dinars or about 5 leva per kilogram in live weight. Most often, Kyustendil residents take advantage of these offers, saying that even with transportation, the lamb costs them 7-8 leva per kilogram.
"In Bosilegrad, they slaughter a lamb on an order given over the phone. They clean it, remove the entrails and they wait with a lamb hanging on the hook in the yard. They even drink homemade brandy as a sign of friendship. You pay and leave." - says a 47-year-old man from Kyustendil.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food reports that the average price of lamb in domestic markets is BGN 13.78 per kilogram.

Mass Bread Remains At The Old Prices, Even If The Price Of Electricity Increases
The price of bread will not rise, even if the planned increase in the price of electricity takes place, assures Mariana Kukusheva from the National Branch Union of Bakers and Confectioners. The low beach capacity of the majority of Bulgarians, as well as the unfair competition from the gray sector, are the two main reasons why the values of bread and bakery products will not change.
Greek Traders Inflated Water And Coffee Prices
Bulgarian tourists complain about the very high prices of coffee, water and sandwiches in neighboring Greece. However, Greek traders prefer to pay fines and inflate food and beverage prices. Our tourists, who have chosen Greece for their summer vacation, say that this year the food and drinks in our southern neighbor are much more expensive than before.
