During the last month the purchase price of live weight lambs has dropped from BGN 6 per kilogram to BGN 3.80 - 4.30. However, the prices of lamb in stores do not fall below BGN 11 per kilogram.
This was announced by the chairman of the National Sheep Breeding Association Biser Chilingirov to the Reporter newspaper. The expert explains that the purchase price of lamb has fallen by about BGN 2 per kilogram due to bluetongue.
The infection of bluetongue in animals has forced farmers to reduce the prices of live weight lambs to BGN 3.80 - 4.30 per kilogram, and the prices included include VAT.
At the same time, however, the price of lamb in stores in the country does not fall below BGN 11-12 per kilogram. And although they buy lamb at visibly lower prices, the chains leave meat prices unchanged.
Ask the retail chains why they do not lower the prices - Chilingirov commented.
The animal market has been in crisis for two months due to bluetongue. Since then, the prices of live weight animals have started to fall. However, this has not been felt by consumers who continue to buy lamb at inflated prices.
Bluetongue has also caused a crisis in meat exports. The import of 20,000 Bulgarian skewers from Qatar has been stopped due to the infection.
According to the rector of the Thracian University, Professor Ivan Stankov, state institutions are delaying measures to tackle the infection. Data to date show that bluetongue has killed about 3,000 animals.
If Bulgaria fails to cope with the disease, the damage to domestic agriculture will be enormous, said the chairman of the National Cattle Union Dimitar Zorov.
At the same time, breeders from all over the country filed a declaration with the chief prosecutor for inaction against bluetongue. The native farmers define as criminal the indifference of the executive power in the country.
The infection in animals appeared 3 months ago, and the first outbreak of the disease was in Ivaylovgrad. Currently, the situation in almost all farms is disastrous precisely because of the lack of reaction from the institutions.
