Stories and legends tell how the tradition of drinking coffee originated. There are two main versions - Muslim and Christian.

According to an ancient Arab legend, the famous healer Sheikh Omar was visited by a bird of paradise. She sang beautiful songs and where she landed, unseen flowers and fruits appeared.

The sheikh decided to find out the secret of this plant and made a decoction of the seeds of the tree. He drank it for a few days and felt that his mood was excellent every day, and his ability to work tripled.

He began using the fruits of the plant for decoctions that helped against headaches. When he added ground beans, the taste and aroma of the decoction became amazing and it was they who made Omar's drink famous.

Christians in Ethiopia claim that it was their monks who discovered coffee. They lived in monasteries in the western part of the country, in the Kaffa area.

One of the monks noticed that the goats, which ate from a plant unknown to humans, became very active and almost danced. The monk tasted the fruit and felt that he was falling asleep.

He immediately shared his discovery with the brothers from the monastery and they all started chewing the fruit. Once one of them took a burnt twig out of the fire and tasted the baked fruit.

The effect was even greater. So the monks remembered to bake the beans, grind them and make a bitter drink.

They called her Kapha, which in Arabic means strong, determined. As coffee became most popular after it was brewed in Yemen, it is also known as the "Daughter of Yemen".
