He expects by the end of the year the prices of milk and most dairy products to go up due to bluetongue. On Easter next year we will eat more expensive lamb.
Livestock farmers and dairy farmers, who are already suffering losses due to the spread of bluetongue in sheep and cattle, have warned about this.
Although the disease is expected to be controlled in the autumn, industry experts say that every Bulgarian consumer will feel the effects.
The native breeders even say that for the next Easter there will be no Bulgarian lamb in the native food chains. This will also lead to higher prices.
However, prices for dairy products will rise until this Christmas.
Breeders say there will be a rise in meat prices because sheep are now sick and cannot be inseminated. The disease has killed thousands of animals because government agencies have not taken timely action against the infection.
As bluetongue has killed a large proportion of sheep, most dairy farmers only work with cow's milk, but the infection has also spread to cattle.
Breeders say they spray against bluetongue every day, but without adequate help from the state they will not be able to cope with the disease.
While treating the animals, the farmers avoid selling the milk, and the dairies are worried about buying it. Thus, in practice, at some point there will be a shortage of cow's milk. With a smaller raw material there is also an entry of the production.
On the other hand, consumers in the country say they are worried about buying lamb, and with the rise in dairy prices they will withdraw from them.
Livestock breeders say that measures against bluetongue have been delayed, and the state is also to blame for the forthcoming price increases. However, it is still unclear how much dairy products and meat will become more expensive.
Agriculture Minister Vasil Grudev says the major damage from the infection will be borne mainly by farmers, who will lose much of their produce.
