The data of the National Statistical Institute show that in the third quarter of this year the agricultural goods in our country have risen significantly compared to the same period of 2011.
The largest jumps were observed in the agricultural sector, where the producer price index rose by as much as 19.2% on an annual basis. An increase is observed in the prices of corn - 11.7%; for wheat - 32.3% and for barley - 22.8%.
Vegetable production rose by 14.2% and fruit - by 32%. Poultry and cattle have also raised their prices. Hens' eggs are about 22% more expensive.
High prices significantly reduce consumption. According to surveys, Bulgarians eat 30% less meat than last year. The trend of reduced consumption has been for three years, but the contraction is already very serious. The deprivations are due to the constantly rising prices and low incomes.
The worst thing is that the next 2013 is going to be very difficult. Experts predict a shock rise in food prices, and the main reason is the drought in the United States. The fact is that in the last five years there has been a very serious jump in food prices, but analysts say that the worst is yet to come.
In the first quarter of 2013, food on the stock exchanges is expected to reach shock levels, after which it will not become cheaper, but on the contrary - will continue to rise in price, but at a slower pace.
By June next year, the price of the consumer basket will rise by as much as 15% compared to current levels.
Experts expect a reduction in the supply of crops used for animal feed, which will lead to a sharp rise in the price of meat.
