It is summer. High temperatures awaken in many of us the need to quench the constant thirst with beer or two. It is only natural that then the natural call will appear, directing to the toilet everyone who has drunk a bottle of sparkling beer. However, several Belgian scientists have found a controversial method to reverse the process by quenching thirst with urine.
With a clear idea of how the above statement sounds, the researchers created a device that uses solar energy to turn urine into drinking water, which can then be used to make beer.
The team of scientists from the University of Ghent believes that their technology can be applied in rural areas and developing countries. Although there are other options for wastewater treatment, according to researchers, their new system is more energy efficient and can be applied in areas that are not even included in the electricity grid.
We are able to create a completely natural biological fertilizer or suitable drinking water from urine, using a very simple process and sunlight, says the head of the research team, Dr. Sebastian Derries.
The device itself collects urine in a large tank, which is heated by solar energy. The heated urine then passes through a membrane that releases water as well as substances such as potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus.
The collected substances can be used to make fertilizers. Using the slogan #peeforscience, the team recently unveiled the machine at a major music festival in downtown Ghent.
With the help of technology, scientists were able to recover 1,000 liters of water from the urine of the celebrants. The research team then announced that the liquid collected at the festival would be used to make beer, one of Beglia's national drinks.
Dr. Deriis reports that the management of several major global airports, retail chains and municipal administrations have already shown interest in the machine. However, he hopes the new technology will solve the problems of water shortages in Third World countries.
