On the markets in our country, half of the poultry meat is imported, said Dimitar Belorechkov, chairman of the Union of Poultry Breeders, adding that after processing, most of the imported meat is only for sausages.

The reason for this trend is that domestic production cannot meet the demand for chicken meat, Monitor newspaper reports.

Most of the imported chicken comes from Poland, followed by Romania.

In 2012 there was a serious decline in the supply of Bulgarian poultry meat and eggs due to the requirements of the European Union for more humane treatment of birds, which necessitated the closure of a large part of Bulgarian poultry farms.

At the moment, however, most poultry farmers in our country have adapted to the concept of breeding the so-called happy hens.

According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, in the past 2016 in our country a household bought an average of 10.8 kilograms of chicken meat, which is a 3% decrease compared to the data from 2015.

At the same time, however, consumption was 2,000 tons per year, which is explained by fast food restaurants, which base their menu mainly on chicken.

The consumption of chicken meat for the territory of the European Union increases by an average of 4% every year, with pork in second place in terms of consumption for the territory of the Old Continent.
