What exactly is sushi?

Sushi is a Japanese food consisting of boiled rice seasoned with vinegar, raw or cooked fish and vegetables wrapped in seaweed known as nori. Served with soy sauce, ginger, spicy green pasta called wasabi, and sashimi - thin slices of raw fish.

It became popular as early as the 7th century, thus people preserved the fish. The cleaned fish was wrapped with rice and salt and left to ferment for several weeks until ready to eat. From the 17th century, people began to add vinegar to rice to reduce the length of time the fish became edible. It was not until the 19th century that humans began using fresh fish instead of fermented fish, which led to the creation of sushi as we know it today.

The most common types of sushi are:

Hosomaki - seaweed in which rice is wrapped and only one type of vegetable - avocado or cucumber, for example;

Futomaki - a thicker roll, which usually contains rice and several types of stuffing;

Uramaki - contains several ingredients. What is specific about it is that the seaweed is inside and the rice is outside;

Temaki - cone-shaped roll with a variety of fillings;

Nigiri - a lot of rice covered with a thin layer of raw fish.
