A large-scale study conducted in Europe has revealed alarming data. Almost half of the samples taken from volunteers from 18 countries, incl. Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Bulgaria and others. have given a positive result for the presence of the herbicide glyphosate.
The research was conducted with the help of two of the largest environmental organizations in Europe - "EU for the Earth" and "Friends of the Earth". With their help and funding, the samples were sent to the German laboratory Medizinisches Labor in Bremen. 43.9% of all samples were positive for glyphosate.
The good news is that Bulgaria and Macedonia were the countries with the least positive samples. The data from the study showed that only 1 in 10 samples in Bulgaria contained traces of the herbicide. In comparison, in Germany, the United Kingdom and Poland, as many as 70% of the samples were positive. The "leader" in this sad statistic is Malta with 90% positive samples.
Glyphosate-based plant protection products have different levels of toxicity. But even low doses of it are toxic to human cells. They have the greatest destructive effect on placental and embryonic cells.
Glyphosate intoxication may impair the endocrine system of a person or cause irreversible effects on the health of the mother and baby during pregnancy and lactation.
A number of studies around the world attribute the problems in spermatogenesis, which are becoming more common in developed countries, to the excessive use of plant protection chemicals.
The herbicide glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides. It is used exclusively in agriculture. Recently, however, it is increasingly used in the control of some weeds in parks and large public farms.
Its most significant use is in the cultivation of genetically modified crops - for humans and for animal feed.
The manufacturer of the plant protection product is the biotechnology giant Monsanto, which distributes it on the market under the name Roundup.
What is disturbing in this case is that none of the subjects handled products containing glyphosate before the study, did not engage in agriculture. All volunteers are residents of large cities.
How, then, did this toxic herbicide enter the human body? The answer is obvious - through food.
Environmental organizations in Europe have been pushing for years to monitor foods that are thought to have the dangerous toxin into the human body.
Environmentalists want regular testing of plant products intended for direct human consumption and animal feed.
The study proves the need for constant monitoring of soils and waters for glyphosate content. Its safety had to be re-evaluated in the European Union as early as 2012.
Unfortunately, the review was postponed to 2015. Until then, we will have to rely on the goodwill of institutions to monitor for elevated levels of this herbicide in soils, waters and plants.
