The harm of margarine, as well as its similar products - vegetable cream and palm oil, has been talked about for a long time. Many studies have found that the hydrogenated oils that make up these products are harmful to health.

A new study on the subject has led to a recent ban on the use of hydrogenated oils in the United States. It was conducted by specialists of the State Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The results show that the intake of these products causes diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, dementia, impairs the quality of breast milk, causes ischemic heart disease, obesity, atherosclerosis, etc. In addition to the United States, some time ago Denmark limited the content of hydrogen-enriched trans fats to 1% per product.

In our country, the Green Initiatives Association is also fighting for a ban on these products. They will submit their request to the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Food Safety Agency.

In their request, they will remind that these harmful trans fats are the basis of margarine, palm oil and vegetable confectionery cream, which are widely used in Bulgaria for the production of biscuits, waffles, pasta and many other widely popular foods.

They will also point out the unfavorable fact that our country occupies the leading positions in the European Union in cardiovascular diseases.

Hydrogenation is a process in which natural vegetable oils extracted from corn, rapeseed and soybeans are heated and their molecular composition is "enriched" with one hydrogen atom.

In this way they acquire greater hardness and durability, but the initial molecular structure of the oils changes. They do not break down and remain in the blood vessels. And so they cause a number of problems in the body.

There are still no norms for the harmful effects of food in our country. When introduced, they should be limited to 1 percent, as in other countries. Those familiar with the problem believe that it is illogical, among all the other harms that our body suffers, to include the food that we process and prepare ourselves.
