The plant was grown in a region called Kaffa, and it was from there that coffee got its name. In the late Middle Ages, coffee went from Ethiopia through Yemen, Mecca and reached Turkey. This is how coffee spread all over the world.

The arrival of coffee in Turkey dates back to the conquest of Egypt by Sultan Yavuz Selim. Mass coffee consumption in Turkey began during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

The first cafe was opened in 1553-1554 in Tahtakale. There, people consumed coffee, listening to all sorts of stories.
