69 died after consuming a deadly beer in Mozambique. Another 182 people who drank the beer were hospitalized and monitored, according to health experts in South Africa.

39 of the victims were accommodated in the districts of Chitima and Songo. The rest are in various hospitals, some of which are still being examined after drinking the poisonous beer.

The beer that took the lives of so many people is traditional for the country and is known as pombe. It is served at every important event in the province of Tete and is usually made from millet.

According to initial authorities, the beer was poisoned after crocodile bile was added. But tests are yet to be done to prove this point.

The government issued a decree on Sunday declaring three days of national mourning in memory of the victims, including a 2-year-old child who had just tasted the beer.

Health authorities have begun collecting food and other items as a donation to affected families.

The mass poisoning incident took place at a funeral. Most of the mourners consumed the sparkling liquid and felt unwell the same afternoon.

Investigators believe the beer was poisoned when people were in the cemetery. However, it is still unclear whether the drink was intentionally poisoned or whether the crocodile's bile got into it by accident.

The woman who brewed the beer was also among the dead.

Blood samples from the victims, as well as beer samples, were sent for testing to the capital, Maputo, according to the director of the local health service, Carly Moss.

The health manager added that this is not the first death of this magnitude for the country from the consumption of the drink.

According to her, the death toll could rise as the health department does not have enough resources to deal with the incident.
