More than 1,000 bee families have died this winter. The beekeepers, who are developing their production in the region of Strandzha Mountain, are in a panic - the bees are dying en masse. No one is spared the catastrophic plague that empties hive after hive.
Beekeeping farmers are very worried about the future of their business. Some of the local producers have lost all their hives and bee families, no one unaffected by the devastation. In this region of Bulgaria is produced famous for its healing properties Manov honey.
According to veterinarians and the chairman of the Strandzha Mann Honey Association, Manol Todorov, the causes of mass extinctions of bee colonies are mainly nosematosis, which is caused by an intracellular parasite and varroasis, a parasitic disease of bees caused by the Varroa jacobsoni tick. Decisive for the emergence of an epidemic that affects all bee families in the region is the relatively high density of hives.
The density of beehives is due to the ban on placing beehives in the forests of the Strandzha mountain, which local farmers resent.
"Strandzha is a wonderful place for beehives and beekeeping," said Manol Todorov, adding - "We are far from settlements, there is no agricultural land nearby, but the hunting farm does not allow us."
Farmers who own diseased or emptied apiaries are hoping for state support. A new bee family costs about BGN 100. According to initial data, about BGN 3-4 million will be needed to repair the damage from the plague on the bee families.
There are 35,000 beekeepers in Bulgaria, and less than 1,000 of them receive subsidies. The state subsidy in the amount of BGN 12 per bee family is extremely insufficient for the development of the production of this organic product. These funds are ridiculous against the background of subsidies paid to farmers and farmers in Bulgaria.
Is the end of manna honey the question that honey producers in Strandzha ask themselves. The problem with bees is not only in certain regions in Bulgaria, but is a global problem.
If bees become extinct as a species, soon most of the plants that reproduce by pollination will also disappear. Then the animals that feed on these plants will disappear. Some experts go further, claiming that if bees disappear - humans will disappear in a few years - something Einstein himself said.
For several years, the scientific community has been talking about the so-called Empty hive syndrome. Empty hive syndrome is observed when a bee family leaves the hive for unexplained reasons and never returns.
Scientists believe that the reason for the mysterious behavior of bees is due to the uncontrolled use of pesticides in agriculture and crop production. Pesticides have a toxic effect on bees, confusing their perceptions.
