Quality French wines will now mature on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. French winemaker Credit Agriciole Grands Crus has announced that it has already stored dozens of bottles of wine off the coast of Wesan Island.
French wines will remain at a fixed depth of 90 meters between 9 and 24 months, and the company believes that this will accelerate the aging process of alcohol.
The producers have stored in their underwater cellar three varieties of wine since 2011 - Chateau-Grand-Puy Ducasse, Chateau Meyney and Chateau-Blaignan.
According to a company representative, the ocean will provide the ideal conditions for storing and improving the taste of their wines.
Credit Agricole Grand Cru announced that the varieties stored on the ocean floor have been carefully selected and their stay under water will change both the wine and the appearance of the bottle.
In fact, the ocean floor conditions are ideal for storing wine - there is no daylight and the water temperature remains stable throughout the year.
Of course, the underwater cellar has its drawbacks, the biggest of which are the turbulent underwater currents. They can jeopardize both the qualities of the wines themselves and the safety of the bottles in which they are stored.
To minimize the risks of losing or deteriorating the quality of the wine, the company commissioned Amorphis to consider how it handled the underwater currents.
Amorphis, which specializes in storing wines and champagne underwater, has developed special underwater racks to withstand strong currents and ensure the safety of wines.
Once the bottles are brought to the surface again, special tastings will be organized, the company promises.
Thus, prominent oenologists, as well as ordinary lovers of aromatic drinks will be able to compare the taste of ocean wine with that of wine stored in a classic cellar according to all technological rules.
