Greek cuisine is a culinary mix between Mediterranean and Balkan cuisine. It was in Greece that the first cookbook from 330 BC appeared.
Greeks like to use a lot of feta cheese, olives, zucchini, eggplant, fish and various meats in their dishes.
Spices such as oregano, bay leaf, mint, basil, thyme, dill, garlic and onion give an incredible aroma to dishes. They skillfully intertwine their tastes and create miracles in cooking.
The use of beef is less common in Greek cuisine, but many different types of fish are used. There is no doubt that the irresistible taste of Greek dishes is due specifically to olive oil. It is an integral part of any main dish, salad or dessert. The most popular are:
Horiatiki - or the so-called Greek salad of tomatoes, cucumbers, feta cheese, olives, onions, olive oil and lemon juice;
Mousakás - Greek moussaka made from zucchini, eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, minced beef, onions, olive oil and spices;
Tzatzíki - is a popular Greek sauce, similar to our milk salad and is made from sheep's or goat's yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, olive oil, salt and a little lemon juice;
Tiganita - these are fried vegetables, most often they are zucchini, peppers, eggplants or mushrooms;
Kolokythoanthoi - carved zucchini and deliciously stuffed with rice or cheese and herbs;
Spanakopita - this is a pie made from spinach, feta cheese, eggs, olive oil, green onions and spices;
Yiouvarlakia - these are pieces of meat with egg and lemon sauce, usually served with freshly cooked white rice;
Keftedes - again pieces of meat, but this time fried with mint, oregano and a little salt;
Païdakia - This is a delicious grilled lamb flavored with lemon juice, oregano, salt and pepper.
Milopita me pandespani - Delicious Greek pie made from apples sprinkled with cinnamon and powdered sugar;
Koulourakia - these are cookies made with butter or olive oil;
Karidopita - fluffy cake with walnuts.
Greek cuisine is rich and varied in flavors. Enjoy it on every convenient trip to our southern neighbor.
