A worldwide survey of obesity-related diseases shows that half of women in Bulgaria are overweight, and the percentage worldwide has increased.

The tendency of obesity is becoming more common, both in our country and around the world. The new data show even more alarming statistics.

For the last 33 years, the number of obese people has increased by 28%, and the percentage of obese children has also jumped, with an increase of 47%.

Since 1980, the number of overweight people has increased from 857 million to 2.1 billion, and so far none of the countries in the world has managed to control the problem of obesity.

The American medical journal The Lancet has published an extensive study on this topic, which included 150 international researchers and 188 countries.

The report says people from the Balkans show the lowest obesity rates. Among Bulgarian boys between the ages of 2 and 19, the percentage of obese people is between 5 and 7.5%, and 26.7% suffer from overweight.

Among Bulgarian men over the age of 20, the percentage of obese people is 16.6%, and of those who are overweight - 59.7%.

Among women, 25.7% of women under the age of 20 are overweight and 6.7% of them are obese. Among women over 20 years of age, the percentage of obese Bulgarian women is 20.3%, and of those who are overweight - 48.8%.

These figures seem low compared to data from other countries. Globally, every fourth teenager, whether a boy or a girl, is at risk of being overweight.

The highest percentage of obese girls and boys under the age of 20 is registered in the Middle East and North Africa.

The latest statistics, made in 2013, show that 2.1 billion people worldwide suffer from obesity or overweight, which means that 30% of the world's population has weight problems.
