The lean table, which is traditionally served, will cost about 40 leva Christmas Eve. The same is the amount that retirees received as a bonus for the Christmas holidays.

For Christmas, however, we will need at least 100 levs for a dinner for a family of 4, and the amount includes pork, rice, potatoes, cabbage, alcohol, pastry, bread, fruits and vegetables.

To put 7 or 9 lean meals on the table, you will need your salary to be over 1000 leva, according to a CITUB study. This means that a large part of our people will celebrate the holidays sparingly.

At the same time, the unions estimate that the price level for food and alcohol in our country is 71% above the average for the European Union. In our neighboring Romania, for example, it is 62%, given that both countries are among the poorest in the EU, according to the Bulgarian National Radio.

In other words, we get less, but we pay more when we shop in the store. With an estimated average monthly allowance of BGN 575 per month, Christmas will be impossible for many Bulgarians.

About 1.5 million of our compatriots will celebrate abroad or in some of the ski resorts, but the remaining 5 million will spend the holidays at home, says expert Mika Zaykova.

According to her, with a bonus of BGN 40, pensioners in Bulgaria will be able to afford meatballs with a garnish of potato salad for Christmas, and for the unemployed and the socially disadvantaged, who will not receive anything extra for the holidays, Christmas dinner will be even poorer.
