Christmas Eve is one of the most wonderful and bright family holidays. Every family prepares to welcome Christmas Eve and Christmas - to decorate your home appropriately, to put a Christmas tree, to invent the best dishes, to arrange the best table, to have the best gifts.

To achieve this effect - a truly full-fledged holiday, we must observe several traditions for all of the above. On Christmas Eve there are certain foods that we need to serve, as well as several rituals associated again with the holiday. Let's look at how each of us should celebrate the holiday, according to tradition.

Christmas Eve is one of the holidays in which the oldest woman in the house has to burn incense at home. A beech or oak tree, called a Christmas tree, is placed in the fireplace. The reason Christmas Eve is made of these two types of wood is that they are a symbol of health.

Regarding the table - there are also a few things that tradition dictates to do. It is important to have a certain number of dishes on the table in the evening. Most often they are 7, 9 or 12, which symbolize the seven days of the week, the nine months of pregnancy or the months of the year, respectively. You can find different information, but it seems that tradition dictates that the dishes should be at least seven in number.

Of course, they must be lean - Christmas Eve is the last night of fasting (from Christmas fasting). Tradition dictates that the table must have - lean sarma, dried pepper stuffed with beans, pumpkin, oshav, walnuts, garlic, honey, boiled wheat.

Beans and rice are a must - there should be foods on the table that swell to increase wealth as well as them. Mandatory on the table for garlic, which chases evil and honey - a symbol of sweet life.

It is good not to drink water during the festive evening, but oshava juice. Traditionally, the hostess must make a ritual pie with a coin. The walnut is a symbol of health. It is good to put a dogwood twig on the table - also a symbol of health.

When arranging the table, the hostess must put the salt on the table first - it helps us get rid of bad thoughts, looks, events.

When the family decides to sit down for dinner, all the products are put on the table - no one should get up. If necessary, only the owner has the right to get up from the table, but he must walk in order to weigh the grain.

Next, the oldest man at the table breaks the bread and hands out a piece to everyone at the table. The custom reminds us that in order for the grains to be healthy and full and to ripen together, the whole family must get up together from the table.

The next step, according to tradition, is for the hostess not to fold the table - leave it like that, with the food left over. It is believed that on this night our dead loved ones come to eat and, above all, to bless the living.

Tradition reminds us of ourselves after dinner - Christmas carols come. The meeting with them is held in different ways in Eastern and Western Bulgaria. The main part is that they sing songs to each member of the family, and of course, start with the owner.
