There are many benefits to protein powder. It can help you lose weight and build muscle, while also being a great way to add protein to almost any meal (even dessert).
Unfortunately, we do not live in a fantasy film and there are only useful things. Each product also has its side effects. Protein is no exception.
Dermatologists warn that there is a staggering increase in acne among women who drink shakes and cocktails soaked in whey protein.
There are also some studies that support this claim. The data show that whey protein better regulates androgenic hormones, such as testosterone, thus stimulating excess sebum production.
What exactly is acne?
There are small gaps in your skin called pores that can be blocked by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells and dirt. When this happens, a pimple forms on the skin. If your skin is repeatedly affected by this condition, you may have acne.
Acne is the most common skin condition. Although it is not life-threatening, it can be painful, especially when severe. It can also cause emotional distress. Acne that appears on your face can affect your self-esteem and over time can cause permanent physical scars.
But what do protein shakes and acne have in common?
The shake contains dairy products - whether in its protein powder or if you use actual milk as a blender. This can cause your face to become covered in pimples. Milk contains two proteins - casein and whey. These are the proteins that are quite common in many protein powders.
Whey is the main culprit. It increases the production of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1. Insulin increases the production of sebum, which is associated with the development of acne.
It can also trigger the production of androgens or hormones that act by overstimulating the sebaceous glands. This can clog the pores, leading to pimples.
If you add skim milk, it can complicate the problem you already have with whey and casein proteins. Skim milk contains additional milk proteins compared to regular milk, which are added to improve its taste and density. It actually contains the highest amount of milk protein, thus compensating for the lower fat content.
Dermatologists recommend that when acne occurs reduce protein shakes and even stop them altogether for a while until the rash disappears. You can also try whey protein substitutes such as pea, hemp or collagen protein.
