Salt producers predict that its yield will be at a record low this year due to bad weather. This may lead to a slight rise in salt prices.
The average annual production of Burgas salt pans is 40,000 tons of salt - this year I think it would be difficult to reach 10 thousand tons with good weather in September-October, when we expect to collect this salt - says Deyan Tomov, who is chief technologist of Black Sea salt pans - Burgas in front of Nova TV.
Bulgarians use an average of 150,000 tons of salt for their table, which is why the spice has to be imported from Israel and Egypt. With the expected lower yield this year, it is possible that imports will increase and the price of salt will increase.
However, more producers hope that there will be no big jumps in values, as no major market crisis is forecast.
The campaign for salt production or the so-called white harvest has officially started in the country yesterday. The campaign started from the shores of Atanasovsko Lake near Bourgas, which is called the white granary of Bulgaria. Thousands of tons of salt have been extracted here for more than a century from water vapor.
When the water passes from pool to pool, it increases its salinity and so at the end of summer the salt crystallizes.
Over the next two months, nearly 100 workers armed with salt shakers will join the white harvest. The salt will be collected manually. Once collected, the salt will go to the processing and packaging shops.
The traditional salt festival will be held on August 29 near Atanasovsko Lake. It will start at 4 pm and last until 10 pm.
This year the theme of the festival is Salt and Birds, and the organizers promise entertainment for both children and adults.
Guests will have the opportunity to scoop salt with shovels and try various culinary temptations prepared by students at the Culinary School in Burgas.
Various salt-based cosmetic products will also be presented at the festival.
