The Bulgarian Pepper Association announced that they expect a 20 percent lower yield of peppers this year due to torrential rains in the spring and summer.
The chairman of the organization Georgi Vassilev added that this year's harvest of Bulgarian peppers has suffered great damage due to bad weather.
In some places the plantations were affected by hail. Some Bulgarian farmers also complain about the bacteriosis disease, which has destroyed their crops.
It is possible that this year, due to lower yields, peppers will be imported from the Netherlands and Poland. This worries Bulgarian farmers, as cheaper foreign imports could completely bring down the price of Bulgarian vegetables.
For Bulgarian consumers, however, competition in the market will be advantageous, as they will buy cheaper peppers.
However, the losses for the farmers in our country will be colossal. According to Georgi Vassilev, this year it is possible that 20,000 farmers will suffer large losses due to peppers.
Many farmers, whose produce has been affected by hail, disease and pests, have decided to replant the areas with pepper. For this reason, mass harvesting will slow down in some places.
So far, the purchase price of peppers is close to last year's price. Extra quality fresh red pepper is bought at 60 stotinki per kilogram.
The green cap on the stock exchanges is 50 stotinki per kilogram, and the pepper melange is 40 stotinki per kilogram wholesale.
Second and third quality red gourd are offered for between 45 and 50 stotinki per kilogram. The price of green pepper of this quality is between 20 and 40 stotinki per kilogram, and of pepper melange - between 25 and 30 stotinki per kilogram.
With the highest prices this year is the kilo of hot pepper, which is offered for 1 lev wholesale. The price of chorbadji peppers is the same as last year - 55 stotinki per kilogram.
However, experts predict that these levels will not be maintained, as the yield of peppers this year is lower. However, no large price differences are foreseen.
