Snake milk / Chelidonium majus / is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Poppy family. The stem is bluish and branched, reaching a height between 30-90 cm, bare or with scattered soft hairs. The leaves of the snake's milk are consecutive, the lower ones with stalks, and the upper ones are sessile and naked.

The flowers are collected 2-6 in simple awnings, which are located in the axils of the upper leaves. They have a cup of 2 yellow-green leaves. The corolla is bright yellow and four-leafed. The stamens are numerous. The fruit of snake milk is pod-shaped, up to 5 cm long. It cracks into two parts. The whole plant contains yellow-orange milk juice. It blooms in May-June.

In Bulgaria, the herb snake's milk is found in moist stony and shady places around gardens across the country. Snake's milk can be found under the names yellowish weed, yellowish grass, lichen, yellowish and warty flower.

Composition of snake's milk

The milk juice of the fresh herb contains alkaloids in varying amounts (about 3%). They are mainly associated with chelidonic acid, but may be salts of citric and malic acid.

Alkaloids in snake milk belong to three main groups - a group of protopine, a group of protoberberine and a group of benzophenanthridine.

Representatives of the latter group are chelerythrin, sanguinarine, chelidonine, homohelidonine. Of these, the main active alkaloid of the drug is chelidonine. The plant contains up to 0.4% chelidonine. It also contains saponins, some organic acids, vitamin C, provitamin A, flavonoids and more.

Collection and storage of snake milk

It is also used to accelerate wound healing. The decoction of snake milk is also recommended for the treatment of ascites, which accompanies liver cirrhosis.

1 tbsp. of the herb is poured 500 ml of boiling water and allowed to stand for 1 hour. The resulting extract is filtered and dosed in a glass of brandy 3-4 times a day.

Treatment with snake milk preparations should be performed under medical supervision. Large doses of these drugs cause poisoning, the symptoms of which are severe thirst and heaviness in the head, hallucinations and dizziness.
