Sweeteners such as sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol and hydrogenated glucose syrup have almost the same caloric value as refined sugar and replace it in many packaged foods, but they are not easily absorbed by the body.

Aspartame is a low-calorie NutraSweet for commercial purposes, widely used in the food industry to sweeten all kinds of products. Other names for aspartame include Saccharin, Equal, Nutrasweet, Monsanto, Searle, Equal Measure, Spoonful, Canderal (E951).

For people who have diabetes or just don't want to ingest excess calories, aspartame is the kind of solution when they want to sweeten their coffee or tea. There are already a huge number of studies proving the harm of aspartame use and even more opponents of this artificial sweetener, which is often referred to as "white death", "sweet death", "slow death", "sweet killer", etc..

On the other side of the barricade are the producers and companies that use aspartame in their products and the research they financed at various institutes, which do not report harm from such minimal amounts of aspartame used in the products. Opponents responded that aspartame should not even be called a dietary supplement and should not be used by humans at all. It is not a natural product, does not improve a person's diet and is not safe for anyone.

The fierce enemies of the sweetener aspartame are adamant that it has been improperly approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a branch of the Health Canada, the World Health Organization (WHO), and more than 100 other regulatory organizations. It has been proven that aspartame in liquids turns into formaldehyde when thawed and is detrimental to diabetics.

In 1980, the Public Board of Inquiry unanimously voted to stop the use of aspartame.

However, with the coming to power of Ronald Reagan, the director of the Food and Drug Administration Arthur Hayes gave the green light to the use of the sweetener. In the following years, a complex network of political and lobbying manipulations followed, as a result of which aspartame became a favorite of the food industry and conquered the world market.

Composition of aspartame

In the Bulgarian Ordinance 8 on the requirements for the use of food additives, aspartame is allowed in concentrations up to 6000 mg / kg and the maximum amount is 600 mg / l in soft drinks based on water and flavored, low-energy or without added sugar, milk and milk drinks. or fruit, low-energy or with no added sugar.

As part of aspartame contains aspartic acid, phenylalanine and negligible amounts of methanol, which itself is poisonous in larger quantities (several tens to hundreds of grams). The ingredients in aspartame are in a ratio of about 50% phenylalanine, 40% aspergic acid and 10% methanol.

Aspartic acid is a natural and non-essential amino acid. Among its functions is the creation of new DNA and a neurotransmitter in the brain. Nature has designed our bodies so that they can control the amount of aspartic acid in them. If there is an excess of aspartic acid, the body converts it into energy, and in case of deficiency - it creates it.

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid that acts as a stimulant for the synthesis of tyrosine and neurotransmitters. A specific enzyme is needed to synthesize phenylalanine tyrosine. Methanol, on the other hand, is alcohol and poisonous in larger quantities. In aspartame, this alcohol is quite small and is not considered a dangerous amount. There are claims that there is more methanol in tomato juice than in a diet carbonated drink.

Where aspartame is contained

Aspartame is used in a huge number of products on the market. Everything that is labeled "light" is practically with added aspartame. Even chewing gum, which is a favorite of our children, is sweetened with aspartame. The sweetener is widely used in the preparation of many carbonated drinks and fruit juices, confectionery and even some biscuits and products from dietary stands.

For example, a bottle of plain tomato juice may contain about 0.085 g of aspartame. In diet soft drinks its content is about 0.024 grams, and in some of the fruit juices even less. Currently, aspartame is added to more than 6,000 foods and beverages, and is sold in almost 100 countries.

About 22 years ago Nutrasuit signed an agreement with the leading companies of carbonated drinks and to this day their products are produced with this sweetener. It is ironic that aspartame is most harmful in people with diabetes, and is used in the largest quantities in dietary products.
