Avocados, which have long been classified as superfoods, are gaining in popularity. Apart from being very rich in vitamins and valuable vegetable fats, it is also so pleasant to the taste that it is used in all areas of cooking, including confectionery.

Avocado is consumed all over the world, with the largest consumers being Americans, followed by Mexicans and Chileans. According to many, this fruit is a preserved Chilean brand, but the real capital of avocados is the city of Uruapan, located in the heart of Mexico. There the fruit is also known by its names The green gold of Mexico and as the Bloody Fruit. It is clear that it is named green gold because of its green color and the good profits that are made from it, but why call bloody avocado, we will look at in the following lines.

Until recently, the city of Uruapan, inhabited by about 300,000 people, was considered one of the most peaceful and peaceful cities, connected only with the cultivation and avocado exports. As in almost all cities in Mexico, there have been drug cartels involved in the export of heroin, cocaine, synthetic drugs and more.

As avocados became increasingly popular around the world, their prices began to rise sharply, and trade in this fruit proved to be a good source of revenue for drug cartels. Since interest in the avocado world has been aroused, there has been a boom in Mexican criminal organizations that impose a tax on ordinary landowners growing avocados.

The word "tax" we used can easily be replaced by "racketeering" because this tax is imposed on peaceful avocado growers not by the state, but by criminal organizations. In most cases, the amount of the tax is determined by the area of arable land and the avocado harvest. However, you can guess that if you are not able to pay your tax, you will not be fined or convicted. Your death is guaranteed.

According to official data, in 2018 alone, in the city of Uruapan, located in the state of Michoacan, which produces about 80% of all avocados in Mexico, nearly 300 murders were registered, including those of children. Such a figure for such a populated city could be compared only if military / combat operations take place in it.

For us Europeans, the avocado can only remain excellent in taste and valuable to our health fruit, which, although at a fairly high price, we will continue to consume in the form of Guacamole or delicious healthy salads with avocados. But for the people of Michoacan who produce it, it has really earned the fame of a bloody fruit.
