In recent years, cherry tomatoes have gained great popularity in Bulgaria. They are beautiful, interesting and are suitable for salads, for decorating all kinds of dishes, and are very tasty and cooked.
Despite their exotic appearance, cherries are not difficult to plant and grow. Caring for them is like ordinary tomatoes. You can buy ready-made seedlings or grow them yourself from seeds. If you have seeds, plant them in small pots or buckets - for example, from yogurt.
If you use buckets, drill their bottoms in several places, most pots are sold drilled. At the bottom of the pot in which you will plant, place a few pebbles for drainage, then fill with soil-peat mixture and plant the seeds. Put the buckets in a sunny place and water regularly. In about a month you will have ready seedlings.
Choose healthy and strong plants from seedlings and remove them together with the soil from the bucket to preserve their roots, put them in a pre-dug in the garden suitable hole, at the bottom of which it is good to put fertilizer.
If you don't have a garden, don't worry - cherry tomatoes can also be grown in pots. Just choose a large enough - at least 30 cm by 30 cm with a depth of 50 cm, put it if possible on the south terrace and do not forget to water regularly, preferably every two days.
If you have chosen to grow a tall stem variety of cherry tomatoes, when the plant reaches a height of about half a meter, put a slat or stake to which you tie it with a sisal or strips of cloth. This is done to ensure the growth of the tomato in height and to strengthen its stem. You can fertilize the tomatoes once or twice with liquid fertilizer or manure dissolved in watering water.
An obligatory rule in the cultivation of tomatoes is to tear off their excess leaves, called stalks. About a month after planting the tomato plant, start gradually removing the lower leaves. At a height of 20 to 50 cm from the soil, the stem of the plant should be left without leaves to improve air circulation and reduce the likelihood of parasites.
It is recommended to remove the leaves every 5 days until the first flowers appear, then remove the leaves under the first bunch of flowers, then under the second, and so on. Knocking serves as a prophylaxis against diseases and leads to earlier maturation.
The time for ripening occurs according to the variety, but if you have sown the seeds in April-May and transplanted the tomatoes to a permanent place in the garden in May-June, then the harvest will be in August-October.
