Not only financial opportunities and personal tastes, but also the religion we profess determines a person's dietary preferences. The most widespread religions in the world are Buddhism, Islam and Christianity.

Are you curious to know which religion is characterized by which menu? Deutsche Welle asked the theologian Manfred Becker-Huberti the same question.

"Religion leaves an imprint on a person's workday, and thus on the food he eats. Each holiday has its own special dishes, drinks and pastries. It was once strictly determined on which holidays which dishes to serve. Some of the customs are preserved to this day, "he says.

Christians generally eat all kinds of food, but there are, of course, foods that are avoided on certain days. This is done during fasting.

According to the Christian religion, he should not eat meat on Fridays, especially on Good Friday. "Because Christ took on a human form, was of flesh and blood, no meat is eaten in his memory on Good Friday. Fish is allowed to be eaten because the principle is: everything below the surface of the water belongs to the kingdom. of death and demons. By that logic, fish are not living beings and therefore can be eaten, "explains Becker-Huberti.

In Islam, food laws are different. Muslims are allowed anything that does not harm the body. The biggest restriction in this religion is pork, as it is considered "unclean". Besides, Islam does not respect alcohol.

"There is a verse in the Qur'an that says that pork, alcohol and blood are forbidden. In other words, before eating, meat must be absolutely cleansed of blood. Alcohol is intoxicating, and anything that intoxicates is forbidden. in Islam, because one has to be sober all one's life, "says sociologist Hassan Karacha.

Unlike the followers of the Prophet Muhammad, the Jews were allowed alcohol at any time. According to their religion, he is a "kosher", i.e. allowed. The Torah, the holy book of the Hebrews, states what is allowed and what is not. Vegetables and fruits are allowed. As in Islam, pork is forbidden.

Judaism requires that milk and meat be stored in separate containers. They should not be mixed when cooking or eating.

A basic rule that every self-respecting Jew must follow is that after consuming meat, he must wait at least three hours to drink a cup of coffee with milk.
