Many people try to get rid of extra pounds. Some go on heavy diets, but often after losing weight they have such an irresistible appetite that they regain their previous shape and even a few pounds on top.
English experts from the University of Manchester have made a discovery that will give hope to many people to achieve the desired fit.
The newly discovered substance will allow to create a new class of drugs for weight loss, which will have no side effects. Scientists believe that it is also applicable in the treatment of drug or alcohol dependence.
The substance is called chemopressin. It affects the pleasure centers in the brain, which are activated when a person eats delicious food or receives a long-awaited cigarette.
During the experiments, it became clear that chemopressin blocks these parts of the brain and thus reduces the pleasure, which makes us not want something very strong, such as food.
Experiments have been performed on mice and found that mice treated with the substance ate much less than the others. No other changes in behavior were observed. In experiments conducted with a synthetic analogue, many side effects and even hair loss were observed.
A drug that also affects the brain and suppresses hunger appeared on the UK market six years ago.
It was initially recommended as an anti-obesity agent, but later it became clear that it increased the risk of developing depression and provoked suicidal thoughts, so it was withdrawn from the market.
Globally, there is an increase in obesity rates in humans. In the 1960s, only one percent of men and two percent of women were diagnosed with obesity. Percentages have now risen to 25.2 for men and 27.7 for women.
If in the sixties the average weight for men was about 65 kilograms, and for women - 55 kilograms, now the indicators have increased significantly and reach 83.6 kilograms for men and 70.2 for women.
The newly discovered substance must first undergo serious tests and prove its safety, only then will it be able to be placed on the market. Scientists are optimistic and believe that it will soon help many people.
