All lovers of mushrooms will be happy to learn that according to the results of a Singapore study, they are good for the brain. This was reported by BTA, referring to the Daily Star.
The study was conducted at the Medical College of the National University of Singapore. Its authors have come to the conclusion that in people who consume mushrooms more than twice a week, the risk of developing a mild cognitive impairment is halved.
Mild cognitive impairment is not classified as dementia, however, it is likely to progress to neurodegenerative disease.
During the study, tests were performed on six types of mushrooms - shiitake, kladnitsa, mushroom, winter bush, canned and dried. All of them have had a positive effect in preventing the disease in question.
According to researchers, the reason for the beneficial effect is the amino acid ergothionein contained in mushrooms, which is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. They recall that inflammatory processes affect diseases such as dementia.
Ergothionein is also found in other foods, such as sea crab, but the amount of amino acid is highest in mushrooms.
