As it became clear at the end of last week, inspectors from the Regional Directorate of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (OD of the BFSA) - Kyustendil found that the vinegar offered by Vinprom-Dupnitsa AC is of poor quality and unfit for consumption.

The experts from the BFSA OD ordered the immediate withdrawal of nearly 3.5 tons of wine and apple vinegar from the trade network in the country. They warned consumers to refrain from buying apple and wine vinegar in packages of 0.7 liters, 1 liter and 3 liters, which are produced by Vinprom-Dupnitsa.

On Monday, October 7, the Commission for Consumer Protection of the town of Dupnitsa started an investigation into the case. From the initial inspection, it became clear that the labels of both types of vinegar contained misleading information.

Instead of the mentioned natural grape and apple fixatives, the products contain only acetic acid, flavors, colors, enhancers and flavors.

During an urgent full inspection, the inspectors of the BFSA Dupnitsa OD found a total of seven violations, for which Administrative Violation Acts were drawn up.

All detected violations are subject to administrative sanctions in the amount of between 1200 - 200 BGN according to the Food Act. Draganov clarified that given the gravity of the violation, the fines imposed will be the maximum.

Following inspections by the BFSA's OD and the Consumer Protection Commission, the case is in the hands of the Dupnitsa District Prosecutor's Office. The prosecutor's office filed a complaint and began an investigation under Art. 228 of the Criminal Code for misleading consumers.

An investigation has been ordered to establish the origin of acetic acid, which is the main raw material in the company's production.

All officials responsible for the production of poor quality and potentially dangerous vinegar are also being investigated.

If the prosecutor's investigation finds that acetic acid contains ingredients that are dangerous to human health, the officials responsible for the production of counterfeit vinegar will be held criminally liable.
