The weight of chicken meat available on our markets has been artificially increased as 50 percent of the meat content is pure water. The amount of salt has also increased, experts say 24 hours ago.

Despite the added water and spices, the meat is edible and does not endanger the health of consumers. The big problem in this case is that customers are forced to pay for a chicken, which after cooking turns out to be twice less than the weight written on the label.

The practice of adding water to increase the weight of meat is used by almost every producer in our country. In this way, they raise the price of their products. The big fraud was proven after analyzes by European laboratories.

The procedure with the addition of water is entirely at the expense of consumers, who only after cooking the meat, discover the great fraud.

There is no regulator in Bulgaria to monitor the water in the meat, and only specialized European laboratories can show the exact content of chicken meat in our country.

The head of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, Professor Plamen Mollov, does not deny the fraud, but reassures that inspections have shown that the added water is not dangerous to humans.

However, customers are dissatisfied because, although safe, this water is quite expensive.

An inspection of BNT shows that with 3 chickens purchased from our stores after roasting, the water from them is equal to half of their content, despite their high prices.

No antibiotics endangering human health have been found in Bulgarian chicken meat. Mollov advises buyers not to choose meat only at the lowest price and to prefer established brands and producers.

The fate of the water content in the native chicken has been considered for several years, and last year it was decided that there would be no restriction on the addition of water to the meat in order to comply with European directives.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food stated that such a restriction would bring major sanctions to Bulgaria.
