The Ministry of Agriculture and Food has decided to remove the restriction on the addition of water to chicken meat and its cuts - legs, wings and other parts of the chicken.

The ministry announced that Ordinance 32 will be amended to comply with the legislation in the European Union. The changes will be uploaded on the ministry's website after a two-week discussion.

The new regulations will abolish the restriction of water, humectants and hydrocolloids, as well as other ingredients whose content is to add water to meat by injection or centrifugation.

The report has already been signed and approved by Deputy Minister of Agriculture Yavor Gechev.

He said that the changes will have a positive impact on trade in poultry meat, emphasizing the need for our laws to be harmonized with European regulations.

The initiative to return the right of producers to put water in chicken came from the Association of Meat Processors. From there they explained that water is added to the meat in order to make it more tender and easy to cook. They defined as myths and legends the claims that chickens are sold, pumped with 50% water.

"The changes will not affect the restriction of water and additives in all chilled chicken, which is sold in stores, but only in the cuts," the ministry stressed.

After the introduction of restrictions on water in chicken meat in Bulgaria, Brussels threatened to sanction the country if it does not repeal the new regulations.

According to the European Commission, with the new regulation Bulgaria violates European legislation, as there is a threat of sanctions because our country has not notified the EC of its intentions.

The ban was introduced two years ago, making domestic chicken more expensive than foreign imports.

The ministry clarified that the new regulations will be introduced in the country only when they are approved by Brussels.

"It is not possible to say the exact deadline for their adoption. It can be approved by the European Commission in a month, after we send the ordinance, it can take a year "- said the ministry.
