Yesterday, the one-month grace period for the implementation of chicken meat, which does not meet the requirements of Ordinance 32. The Ordinance, which was promulgated on 20 November 2012, states that the maximum permissible content of water used in poultry meat should not exceed 4.3%.
The regulation in question was voted in order to protect the interests and health of Bulgarian citizens from unfair producers who sold chicken products containing water and phosphate salts up to 25-30% by weight of meat.
Initially, the ordinance provided for "water" chicken to be sold in the trade network until January 20, 2013. After sharp reactions, mostly from the big food chains, the term for realization of the chicken meat already delivered in the shops was extended by another month.
From today, the only possibility for the sale of unsold chicken products will be to donate them to the Food Bank or to be sent for destruction in a slaughterhouse. Violators of the ordinance will be fined. The sanction for traders is BGN 5,000 for the first violation, and for producers - BGN 10,000.
An additional agreement reached between producers and traders and the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency provides for the possibility of chicken meat preparations, as well as other chicken products, to be sold in the kitchens of retail chains. A similar opportunity is provided for all restaurants, pizzerias, grills, donuts, etc.
The Bulgarian Association of Meat Producers is attacking the controversial Ordinance 32 in court. According to representatives of the association, the ordinance discriminates against Bulgarian meat producers, as it affects only them.
In the submission submitted on January 17 before the Supreme Administrative Court (SAC) it is pointed out that in this form the ordinance puts unjustified trade barriers between the member states of the European Union. The first meeting of the SAC is scheduled for March 25, 2013.
