Authorities in Belgium said that Hollande knew about the eggs contaminated with fipronil last year. But since the organic eggs were found in Belgium, Dutch authorities are washing their hands of the case.

Harmful fipronil has been found in chicken and biscuits, but it is still unclear from which country the problem originated.

The Belgian Federal Food Safety Agency has been the subject of criticism for several days because it is believed that they found the infected eggs at least a month before the news was announced.

But according to Belgian Agriculture Minister Dennis Ducarm, responsibility can only be sought from the Netherlands, which had information about the case and did not share it.

Ducarm added that for him the behavior of the Dutch is inexplicable, because the country is among the largest exporters of eggs. So far, however, the Netherlands has not given an official response to the attacks.

In Belgium, meanwhile, a toll-free telephone line has been launched to provide citizens with information on infected batches.

Chicken producers from three countries also say they have to destroy millions of euros worth of goods because of the harmful fipronil.

A crisis center has also been opened in Germany to investigate which other products could be affected. Random inspections in the Netherlands found that biscuits were among the contaminated goods.

Anne Marie Vanchenberg of the Union of Farmers in Belgium says the damage to the sector could reach 10m euros.
