Dora Ivanova, 26, suffered shortness of breath and a serious skin rash after eating two tangerines bought from a large supermarket in the country, the Telegraph newspaper reported.
Shortly after eating the tangerines, the girl's face swelled. She went to a nearby pharmacy, where they sold her an anti-allergic drug.
Dora applied the product and her condition was relieved, but the next day she experienced the typical symptoms of allergies again, so she sought medical help.
It turned out that the tangerines she ate were to blame for her allergic reaction, as they were dyed with ingredients that some people are allergic to.
This is not the only such case, says nutrition expert Professor Donka Baikova. She adds that more and more people are seeking medical help after consuming fruits and vegetables.
The reason for this are the preservatives and paints, with which fruits and vegetables are mass-processed in our country, in order to have a more attractive appearance and to buy more.
Many Bulgarian traders buy the fruits while they are still green, because their prices are several times lower than those of well-ripened fruits. They then use paints to give them a commercial look and sell them to customers.
Oranges, tangerines and lemons are regularly stained with artificial dyes, which is why experts advise washing them well with warm water before eating.
Earlier this year, there were also several cases of colored oranges and tangerines in the country. Research then showed that the paint used was harmless and not dangerous to health.
According to the existing regulations in our country the use of dyes and preservatives is allowed in certain norms. Paints cause negative reactions from the body only when they are too much.
