23 people died in eastern Ukraine after drinking cognac and vodka, which turned out to be fake. Thirteen people died after drinking vodka in various parts of the country on Friday.

Five people have been poisoned with counterfeit cognac in the Donetsk region, which is controlled by pro-Russian separatists, local police said.

Three men and two women died in the town of Lyman after drinking the same alcohol.

The deadly alcohol was delivered from the Kharkiv region, and the prosecutor's office in the city of Kharkiv has already referred the case. They report that in just 24 hours in the city were registered 5 cases of poisoning with counterfeit alcohol.

According to initial assumptions, the death of the poisoned occurred as a result of large amounts of methanol - wood alcohol.

The first signals of alcohol poisoning were submitted at the end of last week - September 22 and 23.

The suspects are currently three people who own alcohol shops in the Kharkiv region. If convicted, they face up to 10 years in prison.

Illegal alcohol distribution is a major problem in Ukraine, most often produced in rural areas and then sold to cities. But these drinks have not passed the necessary checks and in most cases are dangerous to life and health.

Dozens of such cases are registered every year in Ukraine, and in Russia, where the problem is much bigger, thousands of cases of non-alcoholic poisoning after consumption are registered in one year.
