Italy's Supreme Court has ruled not to prosecute homeless and unemployed people who steal small amounts of food from shops in the country.

The decision came after the case of Ukrainian Roman Ostryakov, who was detained by security guards at a Genoa supermarket for stealing sausage and cheese worth a total of 4.07 euros.

After his arrest, he went to court, which sent him to prison for 6 months and fined him 100 euros.

However, the Ukrainian's lawyers claimed that the sentence was unfair because he was caught with the goods in the store, and not after leaving it without paying for salami and cheese.

However, the Supreme Court of Cassation considered this to be a mere formality. But the fact that the man was hungry and did not steal food in large quantities was not ignored. He took only enough to satisfy his hunger.

At the retrial, the Italian court found that Ostryakov had acted in a state of extreme necessity and therefore rejected the first sentence.

This inevitably necessitated the consideration of the crime from a purely human point of view. Can the poor and homeless steal food from stores in quantities that satisfy their hunger?

The Italian Supreme Court heard the issue on Tuesday. Both the conditions faced by the Ukrainian Roman Ostryakov and the global problem with the starving were taken into account.

When a person is faced with a need on which his life depends, the fact that he stole several products to satisfy his hunger should not be considered a crime in a humane and civilized society, the Supreme Court of Cassation ruled.

Whether other countries will decide to follow Italy's example is too early to speculate, but it is clear that it is time to make useful changes to help the starving.
