Grape growers expect a twice as rich harvest this year. According to their estimates, nearly 100 million liters more high-quality Bulgarian wine will flow into the cellars.
According to the Deputy Minister of Agriculture Vasil Grudev, this year's wine harvest is expected to reach over 250,000 tons of wine grapes, from which over 175 million liters of wine will be produced.
Even according to the roughest accounts, the wine produced this year will be 100 million liters more.
Last year was extremely difficult for wine growers and winemakers due to the cold and the unusual rainy weather for the season.
Yields per decare this year are expected to be twice as high as last year. Farmers plan to harvest 600-800 kg of grapes per decare.
The grape harvest has started and in some places you can now buy high quality grapes from the varieties Sandanski Muscat and Super Early Bulgarian.
The grape harvest of white grape varieties has started in the region of Pomorie. There are grown mainly chuska, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay.
However, the rich grape harvest is a reason for saturation of markets, and hence a drop in purchase prices, growers complain.
The purchase price of early grape varieties starts at 70 stotinki per kilogram, which is nearly 10 percent lower than last year.
The purchase price of grapes will directly affect the price of wine, but not to a large extent, because large winemakers have their own vineyards, ie. rely mainly on their own production.
The growers hope that the weather will remain without significant rainfall until the end of the month, so that the grapes can be roasted a little more in the sun, on which their sugar content directly depends.
If their hopes come true, in addition to a high harvest, they will be able to boast of high quality products, as the sugar content of the grapes will be far higher than last year.
