Neapolitan pizza is a candidate for the UNESCO list, including the intangible cultural heritage of mankind. If the pizza is approved by UNESCO, it will be protected under the name Traditional Art of Neapolitan Pizzerias.
The commission added that each approved dish is added to a list of cultural and gastronomic traditions on the planet. UNESCO is expected to rule on Neapolitan pizza in 2017.
Pizza serves as an identification not only of the Neapolitans, but of all Italians. This is the Italian brand around the world, say the master pizzerias from Naples.
Traditional Neapolitan pizza is characterized by a thin crust of dough that swells only around the edge. This pizza is baked only in brick ovens with wood fire.
There are two versions of Neapolitan pizza. When prepared from tomatoes, olive oil, garlic and oregano, it is called Marinara, and when the ingredients are tomatoes, mozzarella, olive oil and basil - Margarita.
Legend has it that the Margarita pizza was named after Queen Margarita of Savoy and was prepared on the occasion of her visit in 1889 by a local pizzeria. His idea was to make pizza from red, white and green products, symbolizing the national flag of Italy.
Usually the purpose of the inclusion of intangible objects is their preservation. But in the case of pizza, the country wants to get an internationally recognized standard for making Neapolitan pizza at a time when Italy has serious problems with food quality, writes the Guardian.
According to the organization of Italian farmers Coldiretti, the pizza industry in Italy generates revenues of 10 billion euros a year and employs 100,000 people.
UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage already includes Turkish coffee, Georgian wine and gingerbread in Croatia.
