Belgians unite around the desire of UNESCO to include french fries in its list of world cultural heritage alongside fine French dishes.

In Belgium, they have even organized an initiative on the occasion of the French Fries Week, at which petitions will be signed to declare the potatoes a cultural treasure.

The Belgian authorities are in favor of the idea, but for it to become a fact, it is necessary for the Minister of Culture to approve it, and there are three of them in the country.

The government of the Flemish-speaking region of Flanders has already recognized French fries as an integral part of Belgian culture. French- and German-speaking communities are expected to address the issue next year. It is believed that the French and Germans in the country will also support the initiative.

French fries are one of the favorite foods of Belgians along with waffles, chocolate and beer. Potatoes unite the linguistically divided community in the country of Francophones, German-speakers and Flemings, which is why most people think they have a place on the UNESCO list.

The nationwide public debate on their inclusion in UNESCO is expected to end next year.

UNAFRI, the national association of French fries booths from which the initiative originates, claims that these unpretentious establishments carry a unique Belgian spirit, which unites the country's love of chaos with its dislike of corporate practices.

Nearly 5,000 vans in Belgium sell french fries, often forming queues. Potatoes are traditionally sold in a paper bag and are known as fritkot.

Potatoes first appeared in Belgium in the 16th century, but became a stand-alone fried dish only in the 19th century. 95% of Belgians eat them at least once a year, UNAFRI told Reuters.

To date, the UNESCO list includes 314 elements of culture from different countries. Among them are Argentine tango, Turkish coffee, and recently Chiprovtsi carpets were added.
