The domestic market is literally flooded with low quality and poisonous products. Bulgarians are offered the leftovers from the Thessaloniki stock exchange. Our resellers take the cheaper stagnant goods and offer them in our country as fresh.
All stale vegetables and fruits from Thessaloniki come directly to us. These revelations were made by Plamen Dimitrov, executive director of the Association of Greenhouse Producers in front of Trud newspaper.
The scheme is simple. As the Thessaloniki Stock Exchange closes on Friday, everything unsold is usually discarded. However, Bulgarian resellers take advantage of this, taking this product and transporting it directly to Bulgaria.
The priceless obsolete products fall directly on the markets and shops all over Bulgaria. The main stale vegetables coming from Thessaloniki are cucumbers. Tomatoes are also imported from Turkey, and from a few months - from Jordan.
During the upcoming Easter holidays we will be able to find both imported and native vegetables on the market. In the capital, their price usually remains the highest.
Apart from tomatoes and cucumbers, the demand for lettuce has also increased in Bulgaria. Bulgarian production will be offered mainly around and in big cities. In the capital, for example, they come from the surrounding area.
In Southern Bulgaria, however, lettuce is imported from Greece and is of much lower quality. The BFSA is adamant that everything that comes from our southern neighbor has a reduced quality.
Despite people's concerns about the increased content of nitrates, experts reassure that there is no such danger in our products. Producers in our country do not use special fertilizers, as the soil is extremely fertile anyway. However, no one can guarantee the imports.
